Burns Awareness Month – Quick Burns First Aid Guide
June is National Burns Awareness Month with the aim of creating greater awareness amongst the Australian community of burns prevention and correct first aid treatment for burns. National Burns Awareness Month is an initiative of Kidsafe, Australia’s leading community organisation dedicated to child injury prevention and is held in June each year due to the significantly increased risk of burns during winter. Below is a quick first aid guide for minor burns – for major burns please commence first aid measures and seek urgent medical review. Burns First Aid Guide
REMOVE – yourself/injured person from danger and remove any jewellery/clothing around the burn unless it is stuck to the skin.
COOL – under cool running water for 20min. Do not use ice, oil, butter, toothpaste etc.
COVER – minor burns with hydrogel (such as BurnAid) and lightly cover area with a clean dressing.
SEEK – medical advice if the burn is on the face, hands, lap, feet or larger than a 20c piece.
